’3 Idiots’ Gotta Blast
After a huge success of ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and ‘Ghajini’, the wonders of Aamir Khan in ’3 Idiots’ has swept his viewers off their feet with the Raju Hirani-directed film taking an amazing opening at the box office. The movie actually grossed over Rs 10 crore on its opening day, it was much more than ‘Ghajini’.
it had made approx. Rs 2.5 crore in paid previews on Thursday, the day before its launch, ’3 Idiots’, which was debuted on Christmas, opened to a surprising response globally.
Trade sources said the film, featuring Aamir, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor, opned to an excellent response across the country, and even abroad, grossing nearly Rs 13 crore on its opening day.
The sources said the opening day collections for ther film are more than that for ‘Ghajini’, which had one of the biggest openings in the history of Indian cinema. ‘Ghajini’ had grossed Rs 8 crore on its opening day.
And, with the audiences turning out in huge numbers to the cinema halls, the sources said ‘Three Idiots’, which released with over 1,500 prints in India and 344 prints overseas, could well achieve gross collections of nearly Rs 50 crore in its opening weekend.
If that happens, the opening weekend collections for ’3 Idiots’ would be more than the first weekend collections of ‘Ghajini’, which grossed around Rs 40 crore in its first four days (‘Ghajini’ released on Thursday).
The Aamir Khan Madhavan Sharman Joshi-starrer is thus set to be the biggest opener of this year. Till now, Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’, featuring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone was the top grolsser of the year with net collections of Rs 28 crore on first three days, followed by ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and ‘Kambakkht Ishq’, both at around Rs 23-24 crore.
With ‘Three Idiots’ success, Aamir has scored a hat trick of Christmas blockbusters for the last three years- Taare Zameen Par (2007), Ghajini (2008), and 3 Idiots (2009)! Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘Five Point Someone’, ‘Three Idiots’ has been universally hailed by critics as among the best films to come out of Bollywood in recent times. The performances of Aamir, Madhavan, Sharman, Boman Irani and Kareena have also come in for a lot of praise from cinegoers as well as critics, who have ranked ‘Three Idiots’ as among the finest films of Aamir.
It is indeed a glorious end to the year for Bollywood which has witnessed a lean patch this year with a series of big budget and much hyped films meeting with a lukewarm response.
